Club History: The founder of the club is Andre Steyn. The first meeting was held in March 1991 at the old magistrate's building (the court house) in Church Street with three people in attendance. We persisted, however, and during the second meeting in April 1991 we were seven. More and more interested people started to respond to my weekly notices in the Boksburg Advertiser. From there we grew to twelve, fourteen and eventually to 21 members. Hans van der Westhuizen came on board during our fourth meeting(14 people attending that meeting).
The first committee was elected after our fourth meeting and the permanent members serving on that particular commitee were:
Hans van der Westhuizen (chairman) (still a member of the club) Andre Steyn (secretary)(founder member) (still residing in Boksburg) Conley Annandale (executive member) (living in Belgium with Madelaine, his wife) Madelaine Annandale (Treasurer) Willie Liebenberg (executive member) (now living in Cape Town)
The name 'Boksburg Hiking Club' was adopted during the first official committee meeting.
We grew from strength to strength and more members joined by means of 'word - of - mouth' marketing. A monthly news letter containing news and hiking programs was distributed amongst members and exhibitors were invited to show the latest merchandise during some of our meetings (this is were our relationship with Outdoor Warehouse began) Knowledgable speakers were also invited to address members regarding various pertinent topics. The two official designs used on our T - shirts and caps were both designed by members (Margaret Webster and her daughter) These designs included the head of an eagle as well as the familiar 'Hang Ten' foot.
Our numbers soon forced us to seek a larger venue for our monthly meetings and we moved to the premises of Outdoor Warehouse in Jet Park and later to the Boat House on Boksburg Lake. One of our ladies became the secretary for the Southern Region of the Hiking Federation of SA Club Meeting Dates:
