The 8 kilometer long Mosamane Hiking Trail starts on Beatrix farm near Rosendal, is not too difficult and is suitable for adults and children over 12 years old.Starting out at the converted barn where hikers wanting to stay the weekend are accommodated, you travel along the steam through grasslands and dongas.Climb to the rock overhangs and admire the views and extraordinary rock formations that can be seen. Here you will find some of the most outstanding sandstone rock cliffs around and have the chance to see some amazing shapes carved into the rocks by the wind and rain over the years.

Ladders allow you to climb into the popular caves known as Owls Eyes where you will be able to take some stunning pictures. Streams and waterfalls run off the rocks and wild flowers bloom in spring. Please ensure you book in advance to avoid disappointment. We will do some geocashing on Sunday morning before going to Roosendal for lunch. What is Geocaching? It is a type of treasure hunt using a GPS or clues

The main feature of this trail is the geology through which it passes. The  2 million year old Witteberg range is named after the snow that coats it in winter, but underneath the winter white, foothills of Molento sandstone are yellow and orange, with what was once lava piled in distinct layers. Erosion of this sandstone has created many interesting features, shapes and formations in outcrops, overhangs and ‘dongas’ (dips). The trail moves through these formations, up and down cliffs, through falls and dongas. Some areas of the trail involve wooden ladders and others are aided by railings.

Mosamane means ‘ground squirrel’ and is named after the furry critters that frequent the area. It is an ‘easy’ 6 hour trail, but not a family trail as there are quite a few steep uphills along narrow paths. The best time of year to do this trail is spring and summer as there is a proliferation of delicate mountain flora and bird-life, and in winter temperatures can get very cold. The Mosamane trail is a recognised birding route.
